Engaging with Parents

Our next workshop will revolve around engaging with parents, specifically how to communicate effectively and respectfully. Resources below give some insightful information and skills to begin developing now in preparation for our students arriving in a few weeks. Workshop 2 will be held on January 27th. Prior to this workshop, perusal of these resources as listed below would be beneficial.
How to Reach out to Parents
This resource is all about ways in which we can engage and reach out to parents of students with EAL/D difficulties. This site is surrounding the US education system, however the guidelines can be transcribed for the Australian education system. This resource gives tips as to how you can respectfully talk to parents, sharing tips such as learning key phrases of their language and giving tours of the schoolyard.
Progressing Parental Engagement
This next resource entails the ways in which EAL/D parents may struggle as well as more tips and tricks to building relationships and sustaining them throughout the school year. Proposed by the ACT government, it touches on 3 important tips, as well as approaching the relationship as a partnership, ensuring a respectful relationship.
Encouraging Parents to speak their Native Language at Home
Speaking their native language at home is highly recommended, and this resource explains why for parents. By brushing up on our knowledge as to how this benefits our students, we can then educate parents and encourage them to keeping speaking their native language.
Immersive Reader
Immersive Reader is a tool for both parents and students of EAL/D background. This tool breaks down verbs, adjectives, nouns and sub-clauses as well as reading texts out loud. This is an addition to Microsoft Word and Microsoft OneNote and would be beneficial to educate yourselves to help students and parents navigate through this transition
