Transition

Edenvale S.S Community

Multilingualism is all over the world. Almost half the global population speaks two languages, and we are lucky to have new families arriving in our school community who are wanting to learn English and experience what it is like to live in Australia.

English is a hard language to learn and our new students are still learning. Because of this, they are considered to be English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students. What this means is that they know a language and can speak this fluently, however English is new to them. As a community, it is important that we use a whole-school approach to help our new families learn English in an easy way, by learning from EVERYONE.

A whole school approach is cohesive, collective and collaborative action in and by a school community that has been strategically constructed to improve student learning, behaviour and well being, and the conditions that support these.

Department of Education, 2009

How can we do this?
A whole school approach can be done by working together in the following ways
1. Education – we have chosen resources for each student, staff and families to look through and learn about our school and the transition that is to come.
2. Be a Friend – being friendly and welcoming new families will make this transition easier for everyone.
3. Learning together – this journey is one that we need to go through together. We learn better when we work as a team and that is what we plan to do.

We encourage you to explore the tabs at the top of this page. We want to work together to achieve a common goal – to build a better Australia.
