Teachers – Workshop 1

English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) students will be joining our school very soon. With this change comes a lot of new learning and unfamiliar ground. Through this transition, we will aid to provide information and resources for you to familiarise yourself with new course content and curriculum guidelines.


Leading up to this transition, we will also be undergoing several workshops and professional development sessions in order to gain practical skills to transfer into the classroom. The timetable is as below

To begin your journey of this transition, below are resources for you to sift through prior to the first workshop scheduled for 16th January.


EAL/D Overview and Advice
This document gives introductory information and advice for new teachers embarking on the journey of teaching students with EAL/D background. It covers the topics of defining EAL/D students, being culturally sensitive as well as advice for teaching – linguistic and cultural factors that impact learning. This booklet will allow you to grasp the basic concepts of teaching EAL/D students.


Identifying EAL/D Students
This resource introduces the ways in which students can be identified and outlines a whole-school approach to teaching students. It touches on bandscales and ways in which we can use these to document student progress. Differentiated teaching, focused teaching and intensive teaching is touched on, as well as assessment techniques.


Curriculum Guidelines
The curriculum guidelines provides the expectations set forth by the government surrounding student diversity and inclusion. This document will inform your teaching practices in the future in the areas of planning for student engagement as well as the guiding legislations and policies to abide by.


Bandscales
Bandscales are Queensland’s official map for learning of students with EAL/D. They are used to track students in key developmental areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing and within each sector, there are 6 levels. Using these bandscales allows us as teachers to track students progress throughout the year and throughout their time here at Edenvale SS.
