Year 5-6
Welcome senior leaders of the school. This page is all about how you can be a leader and show other students how we welcome new people into the community. We encourage you to be a leader and to be a role model. The resources below are for you to become prepared for school in the coming weeks.
Curriculum Guidelines
This link is to the Australian Curriculum and addresses the definition of what an EAL/D student is. It emphasises the ways in which we can help them transition into a new learning environment.
Immersive Reader
An application used to translate documents and worksheets for students who don’t speak English fluently. Whilst this application will not directly help you, if you become familiar with Immersive Reader, you can help the younger students and fellow classmates.
Understanding Differences
This video is a Ted Talk, spoken by a 9 year old girl, on what it means to understand others and our differences. This is very important as our new students are very different to us – they may have a different culture, like different foods and like different sports. It is our job to make sure they feel like they can be themselves at school, and we need your help to do that.
Buddy Program
As you are our older students, we will be starting a buddy program that revolves around pairing with younger students and reading to them. These books will be in either English or another language. We have asked our new families to find some picture books in their language that they would like to bring to school, and now we are asking you to choose some books in English that you would find educational for our new students. You can choose from the links below:
– ESL Program Books
– Early Reader Books
– Any books that you loved when you were younger, feel free to suggest!
