Existing Parents

Existing Parents

Welcome to our existing parents. As you know, our school is about to undergo a new chapter, and with this come changes in the classroom and in the community. We know you have many questions, which we aim to answer by linking resources to educate and inform ourselves surrounding the upcoming transition of the school. We would like to take this chance to thank you and encourage you to be involved with our new families – make friends, make them feel included and make sure to remember this is all very new to them and could be overwhelming at times.

Australian Curriculum – EAL/D Student Overview
This first resource encompasses a definition of EAL/D and some documents that will be helpful to be familiar with. This is because it will allow you to become educated on our teacher’s intentions as well as how this translates into the classroom with your children. Some key pointers may emphasise ways in which you can incorporate discussions about diversity and inclusion in your home with your children.

Immersive Reader
Immersive Reader is an application that we are encouraging our new families to download, as well as our teachers and support staff. It is an addition to Microsoft Word and OneNote that translates important documents such as school forms and electricity bills. If you were to become familiar with this application, it would make the transition smoother for our new families and would assist the support staff. This application is free when you come to the administration office for a code.

Diversity at Home
One of the very important concepts when our new families arrive at school is being culturally respectful. This includes teaching our students about diversity and celebrating this in the house and in the school. Below is a great example video as to how you can begin to teach your children about diversity. Accessing books that celebrate multiculturalism (such as in our school library).

Involving our new families (P&C Association)
Needless to say, our new families are coming here only knowing other EAL/D families, and as members of the Parents and Caregiver’s Association, it would be great to see encouragement and welcome opportunities for the families to join in the fun. Our new families have been encouraged to join the association, and with a warm welcome, it is certain they will stay.
